Attie Gwendolyn “Gwen” Bormann Hunt ~ Carbondale June 9, 2018

CARBONDALE — Gwen Hunt, 84, passed away peacefully Saturday June 9, 2018. Gwen was born June 1, 1934, in Massac County, the daughter of the late Carl and Helen (Kuhlman) Bormann.

Gwen graduated from Massac High School and later got a degree in Criminal Justice from John A. Logan College. She married Tom Hunt in 1954 and had five children. In 1956, she and Tom brought Pizza to Carbondale and opened Pizza King, which became PK’s. In 1972, Gwen became the first woman to hold a liquor license in Carbondale. She has been in business for more than 64 years. Gwen embraced life. She touched hundreds of people with her love, laughter, generosity and strength.

She is survived by her children, Janet Hunt-Baker and husband Bob, Susan and husband Russell Lane, Mary Ellen and husband Jim Twomey; grandchildren, Ely Lane, Adam Lane, Casey Twomey; and three great-grandchildren; sisters; Yvonne Crosier; Carol Martinek; Karen and husband Steve Humm; sister in law Sue Bormann.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Helen Bormann; son Carl Neil; daughter Kendra; former husband Tom Hunt; brother Kenneth Bormann; sister Joann Throgmorton; and best friend Thelma Steed.

A private memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Judes Children or charity of your choice. A Celebration of Life will be held at PK’s at a later date.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Shawnee Christian Village. She will be deeply missed by all that knew her.
