CARBONDALE — Imogene Marie Huffman, 90, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019, in Carbondale.
Imogene was born June 23, 1928, in Carbondale, the daughter of the late George Nyle and Gwendolyn (Hamilton) Huffman.
Imogene graduated from Carbondale Community High School and Ward Belmont College, and then went on to receive her undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa and her master’s from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She also attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.
She served in the American Red Cross (including Disaster Relief) in Vietnam, Korea, Morocco, France and the U.S.
She was a swimming instructor at the Carbondale Park District, a lifeguard at Crab Orchard Lake, a high school teacher in Peoria, a physical education instructor at Radcliffe/Harvard and retired in Carbondale.
Imogene was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a volunteer clergy person at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, an honorary member of the Carbondale Woman’s Club, a former member of the Garden Club and P.E.O. (Chapter GX) and also delivered Meals on Wheels. She was a member of Tri-Delta Sorority.
She was preceded in death by her brother, William Nyle Huffman, and her cousin, James L. Capel, II.
She is survived by her nieces, Patricia J. Koprucki (Mark E., deceased) and Elizabeth A. Huffman, her sister-in-law Joan Huffman, cousin in-law Mary Capel, cousins and families, John Riley (Linda) Huffman, Amy L. (John) Richardson, William L. (Ernie Martin) Capel, Jimmy Hamilton, John Budslick III, Greg (Erica) Budslick, Heather (Tony) Wood, and John (Mary Beth) Huffman; and great-nieces and nephews and families, Bakr A. Abulkhair, Abdullah Bakr (May Al-Khudairy) Abolkhair, Sarah Bakr (Ghassan Aboalsamh) Abulkhair, Ahmed Bakr (Rana Allam) Abulkhair, Abdulrahman Bakr (Lujain Baz) Abulkhair, Mohammed (Lauren LeCompte) Abulkhair, Piper Huffman, Twix Abulkhair, Minnie Pearl Koprucki.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Walker Funeral Home, 112 S. Poplar Street, Carbondale, IL 62901. with the Rev. Karen Knodt officiating. Visitation will be prior at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery of Carbondale.
