Matthew D Pennington, age 41, passed away October 7, 2026. He was born February 25, 1985 in McHenry, IL to Darcy (nee Filwett) Johnson and Butch Pennington.
Matthew is survived by his parents; Darcy (Brian) Johnson and Butch (Tammy) Pennington; his brother; Luke Pennington: his grandmother; Kathy Sanchez: his aunts; Starr (Dwight) Hochbaum, Barbra Kaufhold, Uncles; Tony (Bev) Pennington, Frank Lorch, Bill Lorch and many beloved cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother Martha Flicek, grandfathers; Robert Filwett and Jose Sanchez; and uncles, Michael Lorch and Louis Sanchez.
After graduating from Grant High School, he went on to attend Southern Illinois University Carbondale. His years playing high school football helped prepare him for the rugby field, where he found a new passion. He loved playing rugby and embraced the challenges and excitement that came with the sport. He was even awarded Rookie of the Year. He also shared his love for the outdoors by giving hiking tours at the Giant City State Park.
Soon after college, he made his way to Denver, where he continued to embrace his love of the outdoors. He enjoyed hiking scenic trails and snowboarding down the slopes. Denver provided the perfect setting for his adventurous spirit and love of the great outdoors.
Matthew recently found his way back to Illinois to be closer to the family and friends he cherished. He will be remembered for his kind heart, infectious smile, sense of humor, and deep love for family and friends. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Matthew had a special way of bringing joy to those around him, and the memories he created with those he loved will forever remain in their hearts.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
