Henry C. (“Catfish”) Neubig, born on June 11, 1932, in Plaquemine, LA, passed away on March 31, 2023. He was a man of many talents and a true inspiration to those who knew him. Henry attended Louisiana State University in 1950 to study music, and shortly thereafter enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951, achieving the rank of AB3. He was most proud of his service during the Korean War, serving on the U.S.S. Sicily and receiving several medals for his service, including the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the Korean Defense Service Medal plus one star, and the China Service Medal.
Beyond his military service, Henry worked at Dow Chemical in Brusly, Louisiana for approximately 20 years all while building his art career. Henry was an accomplished artist and teacher, exhibiting his artwork in galleries and art shows beginning in 1976, becoming world-renowned for his Louisiana Mud Paintings. He spent his time teaching and demonstrating his art, as well as playing the cello. Henry was of many talents and trades and built his family homes in Louisiana. He was a generous man, always willing to share his time and talent with others. Henry loved having all his grandchildren together and visiting, and taught them all how to appreciate and create art.
He was also a devoted family man, survived by his sister, Mary Olga, his wife of 44 years, Linda, his children, Jackie, Eric (Jill), Brian (Bendy), Michael (Kim), and Kurt (Julie), his grandchildren, Shade, Hayden, Lauren, Henry, and Alicia, and his great-granddaughter, Ellie.
Henry is preceded in death by his parents, Philip J. and Marie Antionette Olga Carter, his brothers, Philip H. and Julien Lee, and his sisters, Gerard “Gerry” and Annette. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy will continue to live on through his beautiful artwork, his beloved family, and the many lives he touched. Those who knew him will always remember the tables he built by hand for each of his children, and how he instilled in them the importance of family and the beauty of art. Rest in peace, Henry “Catfish” Neubig, you will always be remembered as an inspiration to us all.
Services will be Wednesday April 5th, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Carbondale.
