Marilyn Johnson, 83, passed away Wednesday, April 12th, 2023, in Herrin Hospital.

Ms. Johnson was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church.

She was born on December 15th, 1939, in Carterville Illinois to Chester and Mary Evelyn (Durbin) Johnson.

Survivors include one brother Mike (Barbara) Johnson and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great nephews. She is also survived by a host of friends from coast to coast.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Phyllis King, brother-in-law Charlie King, one great-nephew Chad Michael Rushing and one great-niece Leteisha Pugh.

Marilyn received her formal education at University School of Southern Illinois University of Carbondale on June 7th, 1957. She received her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Villa Maria College in Buffalo, New York on May 7th, 1973.

Marilyn began her lifelong career in Education at St. Andrew School, Murphysboro IL, as a 5th grade teacher in 1976. She became the principal of St. Andrew School in 1977 and held that position for 26 years. Marilyn continued her career as the principal at St. Bruno Catholic School, Pinckneyville IL, from June of 2002 until her retirement in May of 2005.

Marilyn devoted her life to education. She was dedicated to providing a faith-filled education that would guide her students to achieve success.

Services will be held at St. Andrew Catholic Church located at 723 Mulberry Street, Murphysboro, Illinois with Father Robert Flannery officiating. Visitation will be held on April 20th at 10 am and Mass will begin at 11 am. A burial will follow immediately at Pleasant Grove Memorial Cemetery.

Memorial donations can be made to St. Andrew School Building Fund 723 Mulberry Street Murphysboro, Illinois 62966.

Walker Funeral Home of Southern Illinois entrusted with arrangements.
