William Samuel “Sammy” Patterson, 43, of Carbondale, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at 6:12 p.m. at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, surrounded by his loving family.
William was born on August 1, 1982, in Murphysboro, Illinois, the son of the late George Ronald Patterson and Sue Ellen Hazel (Patterson).
William dedicated nearly 20 years of service to Southern Illinois University in the Food Service industry, where he built lasting friendships and took pride in his work. He had a deep love for the outdoors where he enjoyed rafting and hiking with his family, friends and beloved dogs. He also found joy in bowling and especially cooking for everyone he loved. Above all, his greatest happiness came from spending time with his children and granddaughter. His love for them was unwavering, and he treasured every moment shared together.
He is survived by his children, Lexi (Brett Phelps) Patterson and Jackson (Payton Toliver) Patterson; his cherished granddaughter, Jade Phelps; his sister, Sarah (Doug) Pyle; his nieces, Taylor Hazel and Aubrey Jones; his dear friend Brian Calcaterra; and his beloved faithful companion’s Ester and Emma; and many other beloved family members and close friends who will deeply miss him and his unforgettable laughter.
William was preceded in death by his parents, George Ronald Patterson and Sue Ellen Hazel (Patterson), and his brothers, Justin Daniel Jones and Zack Vanausdoll.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
