Andy Sisulak’s lifework to improve his home – Southern Illinois – was cut short on Saturday, April 9 when he died following a heart attack at home.
Whether one knew him as Andrew, Andog, Mr. Chairman or one of the many other nicknames that he so easily attracted, his legacy to Southern Illinois will not be forgotten, no matter how humble he was with his contributions to the region.
Known by many for his quick humor, creativity and boundless generosity with his help and support, he was equally giving to his family and friends. He seemed his happiest and most content during his travels, and that didn’t matter if he was on backroads to the rivers, climbing Arenal Volcano or jetting to Washington, D.C. He also played his share of basketball and golf.
Andrew Thompson Sisulak was born Dec. 25, 1962, in Carbondale, Illinois, to Stephen Andrew and Kristin Stotlar Sisulak.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Kristin; an infant twin brother, Michael Stinson Sisulak; paternal grandparents, Esther and Stephen Andrew Sisulak; maternal grandparents, Helen Thompson and Raymond Christopher Stotlar; aunt, Karen Stotlar; and uncle, John “Jack” Stotlar.
He leaves his family, including his father, Stephen Andrew Sisulak, Jr, Carbondale; sister, Karen Sisulak, Springfield, Ill.; brother, Guy (Lori) Sisulak, Carterville; brother, Chris Sisulak, Carbondale; uncle, Raymond (Debbie) Stotlar, Carbondale; uncle, Curtis Stotlar, Milwaukee; uncle, John (Dot) Sisulak, Tempe, AZ; cousins, Laura Sisulak Wagstaff and family, Portland, Ore.; and Katie Sisulak and family, Tempe, AZ.
A member of the Carbondale Community High School Class of 1980, Andy earned his marketing degree from the University of Mississippi and reveled in the traditions of Ole Miss.
He launched his career into various marketing positions around the country, including those for the Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) racing in the U.S., Canada, England, Australia and Mexico; the Skip Barber racing school and race track; Exxon racing team promotions nationwide; and the Tunica (MS) Air Races.
Upon his return to Southern Illinois, Andy’s work with Alexander County’s economic and community development, tourism and non-profit entities helped spark his passion for public service.
During his marketing director tenure with Baysinger Architects in Marion, Andy was accepted in 2017 into the Leadership Institute for the federal Delta Regional Authority. It is an eight-state coalition of Mississippi River counties and communities ranging from Southern Illinois to New Orleans dedicated to improving life, business and government along the river.
Since then, Andy helped coordinate local and coalition projects, completed the Harvard Kennedy School Executive Leadership’s Delta Leadership Academy and was serving as the chairman of the DRA’s Regional Advisory Committee.
Since then, he has worked with public agencies and non-profits too numerous to mention. At the time of his death, Andy was a legislative aide for State Sen. Dale Fowler’s staff in Harrisburg.
He also most recently served as the Southern Illinois Mayors’ Association secretary and was a board member for the Tri-State Food Bank and the Fowler Bonan Foundation as well as many other boards, committees, chambers of commerce and programs.
He was working on creating a fund for the DRA’s Leadership Network. In an effort to see his legacy continue in the region, the family requests contributions for a business development grant program with the Delta Leadership Network. Donations may be made at www.sicf.org/andysisulak or by mailing a check to SICF, P.O. Box 1772, Marion, IL 62959.

April 14, 2022 at 11:55 pmDear Sisulak family,
I was saddened and shocked to see Andy’s obituary today. I became acquainted with him through his involvement in CEO. While he was at Baysinger, he was a regular speaker at Union County CEO and often attended our trade shows. His dedication to youth seemed to only be topped by his focus on building better communities through Chambers of Commerce. At our meetings he shared such interesting stories of his life’s journey, such as his racing involvement-especially with planes, and marketing tips that students could understand. He was very much appreciated by all of us in Union County CEO.

April 19, 2022 at 1:51 pmDear Karen, Lori and Family,
What a shock. Andy will always have a footprint on the heart of Southern Illinois. He was just one of those people who could work in the shadows while throwing a spotlight on our region. Passion and integrity are values that Andy held. He will be greatly missed. Praying for you!

April 26, 2022 at 3:52 pmI was saddened and surprised to learn about the loss of Andy. My deepest condolences to the family. For several years quite a while back Andy was a regular with SIU’s faculty/staff and select others lunch time basketball group. He was fun to play with and against and exhibited great sportsmanship. We also had a few battles on the links with an occasional beer afterwards. More importantly, Andy’s hard work with the DRA and elsewhere was very important to the region. Southern Illinois will greatly miss him.
